Brookville, Upper Brookville and Old Brookville are villages in the remarkable Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County in Long Island, New York. This collection of three villages is know as “The Brookvilles”. The collective Brookvilles form an inverted triangle with the base facing north. They’re bounded by Old Westbury and Jericho to the south, Mill Neck, Matinecock and Glen Cove to the north, Muttontown and East Norwich to the east, and the unincorporated area of Glen Head to the west. They’re roughly 20 miles east of Manhattan on the north shore of Long Island. English and Quaker farmers settled the area of The Brookvilles in the 17th and 18th centuries. Dutch settlers soon arrive. They purchased properties containing several brooks and springs. The Brookvilles attracted New York’s wealthy during the 1900’s and most of the farmland owned by Dutch and English farmers was sold to the wealthy to build lavish mansions with expansive, lush lawns. Wealthy families such as the Posts, Vanderbilts, DuPonts, Guests, and Christies owned land in the area. Many of the old estates have been subdivided and redeveloped resulting in a beautiful blend of both new and old homes. This entire region of Long Island became known as “The Gold Coast”. Twenty-two large estates in the area were incorporated into what is now known as the village of Brookville. 

Brookville is 4 square miles with a population of 3,465. Many well kept area golf courses, which wind along tree lined country roads, are found nearby. Comparatively, Old Brookville has a population of 2,134 residents and is approximately 0.4 square miles. Upper Brookville with an approximate population of 1,737 residents, comprises about 4.3 square miles. Hope Goddard Iselan, an American sports woman and the first woman to crew an America’s cup race, was opposed to the name proposal of “Lower Brookville”. “I refuse to live in “lower” anything. If you must call it something, and I suppose you must, call it Upper Brookville,” and the name stuck. This area use to be an international polo mecca and stables and polo fields are still enjoyed by local residents. Bridle paths meander past horse farms and nature preserves. The schools in the area are among the country’s finest and are one of the many reasons why the Brookvilles continues to be a popular destination among homebuyers.
