    Amagansett is a darling hamlet in the Town of East Hampton, Suffolk County, on the beautiful south shore of Long Island, New York. At the time of the 2010 census, Amagansett had an approximate population of 1,165 residents. Amagansett has a total area of 6.6 square miles and is in the 11930 zip code. The area of Amagansett is sometimes referred to as Skimhampton, specifically areas south of the Montauk Highway along Skimhampton Road. The name Amagansett is derived from the Native American name “Montaukett” meaning “place of good water”, specifically referring to water from what today is Indian Wells Beach. The Devon Colony on Gardiner's Bay, Amagansett Village, and Beach Hampton are all areas of Amagansett. The "Walking Dunes" in Napeague and the Atlantic Double Dunes, formed anciently during the last ice age, are now protected by The Nature Conservancy and local and federal governments. 

    Amagansett, unlike the rest of the Hamptons, was settled by descendants of English settlers and a trio of Dutch brothers. Amagansett was settled between 1680 and 1690 after the English took control of New Amsterdam. Several historically noteworthy events have taken place in Amagansett. In 1942, four German spies, involved in Operation Pastorius, were dropped off from a submarine on the beach in Amagansett bound from New York. Coast Guardsmen saw them and notified police and FBI foiling their mission of attacking American economic targets. In 1998, then president Bill Clinton, who was vacationing in East Hampton, gave a radio address from the Amagansett Fire House. Later that evening, he dined at the home of actors Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger.  Clinton returned to Amagansett in 1999 to play a round of golf at the South Fork Country Club.

    Amagansett has the most impressive array of mansions in East Hampton. In 2007, one sold for $107 million, at that time the highest price for a private residential property. To see a house still standing from the 18th or 19th century is not uncommon in this remarkable place. Amagansett is a community of exclusively single family homes.
