    Rockville Centre, incorporated in 1893, is village in the town of Hempstead, in southwestern Nassau County, Long Island, New York and has a population of around 24,023 residents. Rockville Centre covers 3.4 square miles and falls in the 11570 zip code. The Recqouakie Native American Indian tribe originally lived in the area until dislocated with the arrival of English and Dutch settlers. In 1849, the area was named “Rockville Center” in honor of local Methodist preacher Mordecai “Rock” Smith. By the turn of the 19th century, six mills served the needs of the region’s miners and farmers. Sea captains were drawn to the area because it was a great place for their families to live while they were at sea. The abundance of shellfish and game lured people from New York City to Rockville Centre which was now easily accessible by both stage coach and rail. Rockville became known as a commuter city and in 1867 was connected to New York City by way of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), bringing Rockville Centre into the modern era. Today the hamlet is on the Babylon Line of the LIRR. The area saw tremendous growth after WWII. Rockville Centre became home to the first ATM in the country in 1969. Today, Sunrise Highway runs through the southern portion of the city and Southern State Parkway forms the northern border. Hempstead Lake is to the west, the villages of South Hempstead and Baldwin to the east. New York City is 35 minutes by train, and it’s a 15 minute drive to Kennedy airport. To get to midtown Manhattan will takes about 45 minutes, depending on traffic.

    The majority of students in this community attend the Rockville Centre Union-Free School District while 20% are served by the Oceanside School District. The village has five public elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. In 2012, Southside High School was ranked #2 in the state of New York by News and World report. There is also a private Catholic school for pre-kindergarten to 8th grade. Local Molloy College offers a liberal arts education. On the campus is a 550 seat auditorium where performances in comedy, theater, music, and dance are held. Four hundred retail and service shops, as well as professional and corporate offices, are located in Rockville Centre. Village Green is the setting for special events for residents, spring time arts festivals, summer concerts, and holiday programs. There are eight public parks in the community comprising 150 acres of ballfields, playgrounds, fishing ponds, tennis courts, and trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Nearby Rockville Links Club is a private 18 hole golf course. Local municipal government here provides the most comprehensive services of any village on Long Island.
