The suburban hamlet of Hewlett is known with Woodmere, Lawrence, Cedarhurst and Inwood as one of Nassau County's Five Towns. Though the North Shore is often referred to as Long Island's Gold Coast, this area of the South Shore has been known to rival its concentration of affluence. However, these family-friendly neighborhoods offer a broad and diverse range of housing choices and lifestyles. Hewlett or the Hewletts can refer to the hamlet itself as well as the villages of Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck and sometimes Woodsburgh. These communities are all served by either the Hewlett-Woodmere School District or the Lynbrook Union Free School District as well as several private schools.
In nearby Cedarhurst, the fashionable Central Avenue shopping district offers stores like Banana Republic as well as small clothing boutiques and specialty shops for men, women and children as well as furniture and interior design studios and more. The area's many restaurants offer choices from a quick bite to special occasion dining. Hewlett's Grant Park covers 35 acres with a lake for fishing, a workout area, sports fields, tennis courts and plenty of picnic spots and green space.
Other South Shore attractions include the Robert Moses-designed Jones Beach State Park, Belmont Park Race Track, Adelphi and Hofstra Universities and Valley Stream and Hempstead Lake State Parks.
By car, Hewlett is about 40 to 45 minutes from Manhattan with light traffic. The Hewlett station offers Long Island Rail Road service to Penn Station in Midtown it's about a 45-minute commute from New York City by rail. John F. Kennedy International Airport is just seven miles away.
