    Dix Hills is a vibrant hamlet in the town of Huntington, in Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. Dix Hills is situated in the center of Long Island, on the southern edge of Huntington, and borders the town of Babylon. The hamlet is bisected east to west by the Long Island Expressway, as well as Northern State Parkway. NY-25 is the northern boundary of the hamlet. Nearby communities are Melville, Elwood, Commack, Brentwood, and Deer Park. At the time of the 2010 census, Dix Hill had a population of 26,892. Dix Hills has a total area of almost 16 square miles and is in the 11746 zip code. 

    Originally, the area of Dix Hills was inhabited by the Native American tribe of the Secatogue. According to lore, the area was known as Dick’s Hills, named after local native Dick Pechenga, who established his wigwam in the area and farmed local lands. The area was used for farming until after World War II when the housing boom took place on Long Island. Developers seized the opportunity to construct much needed affordable housing for soldiers returning from the war and their families. The children of Dix Hills attend schools in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District and the Commack School District. Commack High School is ranked as the 95th best high school in the country. Five Towns College is also located in the hamlet. Half Hollow Hills Community Library serves residents of Dix Hills. The average July temperature in this area of Long Island is 82 degrees.
